Alembic’s algorithms for storing and retrieving baked, time-sampled data enable high-efficiency caching across the digital production pipeline and sharing of scenes between facilities. As an open-source interchange library, Alembic has seen widespread adoption by major software vendors and production studios.

Alembic was born from a unique partnership between Imageworks and ILM to create a more universal geometry format that could be shared among VFX vendors and software applications.  Teams from ILM and Imageworks worked together to define the format and Open-Sourced it in 2010.  It was first used at Imageworks on Oz the Great and Powerful. Since then, Alembic has gone on to be the standard geometric format for the VFX industry and the applications that we use. Imageworks continues to use Alembic today on all of our VFX and Animated projects.
